On February 8th
through 10th of the new year of 2002, members of multiple San
Diego communities came together to witness something truly unique; the
sport of sailing. How is that unique you may say? The AIMS Turbo Regatta featured sailors from around the world who have significant disabilities. To these sailors, having a sport be open to them at a competitive level is something extraordinary. What you or I may take for granted, people with disabilities do not. Having a sport open for all ages, genders and levels of disabilities is very exciting. There is no other program like it in San Diego. It is a program that mitigates obstacles that are thought to impact a person’s self-esteem or abilities and highlights the equality that an individual can have through hard work and determination. This event brought together members of the sailing community who have never seen a Martin 16 and were captivated by its possibilities. The four-day event was a success in raising awareness of adaptive sailing along with giving sailors with disabilities in San Diego and across the world a platform from which to demonstrate their abilities. For all those involved, thank you very much for your support and participation in such a meaningful event. Joshua Ross AIMS Program Director |
